WATER DRIVEN LIGHT
Sunlight is healthy for us to receive each day. It does so much for our disposition and sense of well being which is why it is an important form giver in my design work. Anyone can put windows in a wall to let sunlight in, but I strive to take light to a more artful level.
How it can be animated, filtered and reflected in interesting ways one of which is in reflection. Here are two projects where light is animated by natural reflection.
This is a Kitchen remodel that was conceived as a slice of sunlight across and through a stucco box (see Kitchen Plan Concept sketch). We opened up both of the exterior walls on the east and west sides to allow the light to enter into the home during the morning and afternoon each day.
Located on Lake Minnetonka we used water and sunlight together in an artful way. The sunlight is animated by the reflecting light off of the water in the swimming pool that illuminates the curved Kitchen ceiling with waves of light (see East-West Section sketch).
The resulting Kitchen fits all of the functional requirements of the homeowner while creating a beautiful sunlight filled space (see Kitchen Photo).
Another use of water to animate light is in this residence for an art collector. The main living space is ringed with water that the sunlight reflects off of all day long animating the walls and ceiling of the space. The water in this home has another function as the ring of water drops into a center trough next to an operable window so that the room is filled with the sound of a rushing brook (refer to the Plan / Section sketch).
